Winter seems to have been longer than usual this year. An endless succession of peeking out from under the warm covers at the grey and cold, leavened only by joyous dinners with sunny friends, rich casseroles, slow cooked beans, and fantastic roasts.
But finally the seasons have turned. Passers-by are wearing shorts and t-shirts, the overcoat is back in the cupboard to wait another year. We've had our first asparagus of the season, and the second, and our thoughts are moving from slow-cooked beans and ribs to salads and seafood. And the first tiny shoots of herbs are poking their heads out of the On Golden Fond garden.
Mind you, as I write we're on day two of a five-day rain-a-thon and its cold again outside. But it's good rain, it'll fill the reservoirs and make the farmers happy.
