Cricket Match and The Hindu Red Dot

India won the prestigious World Cup 2011 in Cricket this year. Congratulations!

My wife, Judy, has had a team from India here in the US for training and conversion to our systems. Friday was their last day, and to thank them and say fairwell, Alcatel-Lucent challenged them to a cricket match - if they would show ALU how to play the game. They readily agreed and a field behind the building was set up and the games began. The teams were mixed so that experienced cricket players were with the rookies.

The teams only had cricket bats and they had to use tennis balls.

Also, there were no wickets, so trashcans were used instead.

Here are the people who had the most fun - and there was no beer involved.
Judy is on the far right.  Dot man is in the middle in the striped shirt.

Anycricket, fun was had by all, but there was one dude (Dot Man) there who had the ’red dot’ between his eyebrows.  I don’t know what it means on men, but I did post about the red dot awhile back. And since I have some new followers, I though I would enlighten them to why the women have the red dot.

For centuries, Hindu women have worn a dot on their foreheads. This is called a ‘Bindi’. However, it is not to be confused with the Crocodile Hunter’s daughter, Bindi.

Anydot, most of us have naively thought this was connected with tradition or a religious symbol, but the Indian Embassy in Ottawa has recently revealed the true story.

When a Hindu woman gets married, she brings a dowry into the union.  On her wedding night, the husband scratches off the dot to see whether he has won a convenience store, a gas station, a donut shop, a taxi cab or a motel.  If nothing is there, then he must remain in India to answer telephones and provide us with technical advice.  That is one reason they are so hard to deal with.  They are pissed.

This is another service announcement brought to you by me in order to keep you informed and educated. It is part of my ongoing attempt to educate the world.

You’re welcome.
