The Melbourne Demons are one game from the final after beating the Brisbane Lions by 33 points at the Adelaide Oval tonight.
After a brief opening period, the Demons beat the Lions with a four-goal bout to a second quarter to take a 30-point lead at the main interval.
Brisbane responded by keeping Melbourne goalless in the third term, but the Demons were still ahead by more than three goals to start the fourth quarter, and from there they ran away for a 13.15 (93) to 9.6 win. (60).
The win puts this year’s junior Premieres in the preliminary final, which they recently caught up in 2018, before losing the football finals in the next two seasons.
Meanwhile, the Lions will face the winner of tomorrow’s match between Western Bulldogs and Essendon in next week’s semi-final.
Star midfielders Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca racked up 33 and 30 disposals, respectively, while Bayley Fritsch scored four goals.
For the Lions, five goals to Charlie Cameron were a positive sight despite the defeat.
A major blow was dealt in Brisbane early in the game when striker Dan McStay was left with blood and forced out of the game after touching his knee in the face.
McStay’s night lasted just five minutes after he took an accidental knee to the face from teammate Nakia Cockatoo during a scoring contest.
The Demons are in the midst of a 57-year drought, having not won the flag since 1964.
